Mayor's Challenge PDF Print E-mail

Get Fit Longview is a community campaign to raise awareness about obesity issues, and to encourage our citizens and families to become more physically fit. We want to help jumpstart those lifestyle changes that lead to better dietary decisions and exercise habits for the citizens of Longview.

As Mayor of this great city, I am committed to the overall welfare of our citizens and there is room for improvement when nearly 66% of Texas adults are considered overweight or obese. But the good news is, proven community-based programs can help reverse this alarming trend. Through the coordination of the Mayor’s Fitness Council and sponsors, Get Fit Longview also will be providing ongoing opportunities for residents to participate and take advantage of fitness initiatives, education, and wellness programs that focus on getting fit and staying fit.

As a new year begins, I am encouraging all sectors of our community to be a part of the fitness wave that will be taking place throughout Longview. This is an ideal opportunity to begin learning how you can make a difference as a business community, school administrator or faith leader. Everyone has a role when it comes to making our city the most “fit city” in Texas.

I am very excited about this initiative. Catch the fitness wave, and I look forward to working with you.

Yours truly,
Jay Dean Mayor, City of Longview
